Animal Rights - A Beginner's Guide: A Handbook of Issues, Organizations, Actions & Resources
Published in Paperback by Writeware (June, 1996)
Author: Amy Blount Achor
Average review score:

Great book!
Animal Rights - A Beginner's Guide is a great book for everyone from vegetarians to vegans to environmentalists and even to skeptics! Chapters cover:
1. animal rights (why do animals have rights? What animal rights is not, etc...)
2. Violence towards animals (speciesism, selective compassion, the foundations of cruelty, etc..)
3. Companion animals (attitudes towards them, puppy mills, trapping animals, being a responsible caretaker, etc...)
4. Vegetarianism (what is it? why is it important to animal rights? Health factors, etc...)
5. Factory Farms (what are they? the cost to family farms, environment, consumers, and animals)
6. Research, Education, and Testing (vivisection, animals in classrooms, military research, product testing...)
7. Wildlife in crisis
8. Animals in entertainment (circuses, zoos, TV, etc..)
9. Taking action (steps)
10. Animal Advocacy Organizations
11. Vegetarian organizations
12. Products and services
13. Further reading
I found that ALL the chapters had helpful details to spread the word to other people. It's not just a book for vegetarians, it's a book for everyone; so that everyone can see how we exploit animals, the environment, cover it up in the name of science, and what we can do to stop it. A GREAT resource book for beginners and non-beginners.

A must have for anyone who wants to know the truth!
This book is an amazing copulation of the many current and pressing issues in animal welfare and rights today. It is easy to read yet packed with information regarding almost every area of animal welfare. It presents the issues and exposes some of the aweful truths behind the topics discussed. In addition, each chapter has information on what you can do to make a difference. Whether you're a beginner or a long time activist this book is a must have. The resource listings alone are more valuable than the cost of the book!

Amy Blount-Achor knows her stuff!!
I had to do a research paper during my freshman year of college and her book helped me out immensely along with educating, and entertaining me. She really puts the issue of animals rights in resarch out in the front. She is a wonderful advocate and author.

Struggling With Scripture
Published in Paperback by Westminster John Knox Press (March, 2002)
Authors: Walter Brueggemann, William C. Placher, and Brian K. Blount
Average review score:

One Struggle we all have in Common!
When we chose Prof Bruegge's books to give away as Christmas gifts, one of those was Struggling with Scripture. It brings out one of his personal beginnings in the confirmation service by his Father. At that point he is given the Psalm verse, 119:105: "Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path." In his recorded memory, our good Professor says: "He did in that act more than he knew. Providentially, I have no doubt he marked my life by this Book that would be lamp and light..."

From his long and intimately personal love for the Psalms, he touches upon his early church tradition of "simple, irenic piety from the past..." One of those few pages in Bruegge's writings that he piles up both adjectives and adverbs like, "seemingly, utterly beyond me in its richness, concretely in my hands and unprecedented generativity!" When he comes out with creative linguistics and adds the emotion of his spoken words, it is enough to take you back into time and forward into what will surely follow...In his rapidly moving train of thought!

He touches Biblical Authority through the avenures of Inherency, Interpretation, Imagination, Ideology and Inspiration. In one of his first classes at Columbia Seminary when I was present he used these five huge words beginning with I's. That immediately hooked me into signing on for his Survey of Old Testament and next his Theology of the Old Testament.

Brueggemann's first Chapter lives up to the Preface comments by William Sloan Coffin...where he introduces Prof Blount and then Prof Placher and finally in more detail Prof Bruegge. I cannot say enough good things about this little gem of three chapters and delightful preface of Bill Coffin's. When you have heard these two similarly dramatic speakers then you surely will want to digest their magically miraculous, wondrous descriptive words. Gratefully, Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

Breath of fresh air
This is a good read, I would not suggest is a quick read. The authors are biblical scholars in their right (Brueggmann, Placher and Blount) and they give the reader food for thought. The book will challenge your thinking and maybe the way you look at the world. Don't read it if you are not honest with your struggle.

Breath of fresh air
This is an excellent, short book. The authors have made it an easy read and it has a lot of food for thought. If you want to expand and challenge your mind, then this is a book for you. I would not recommend this book to anyone who does not want to be challenged or is not honest with their faith journey.

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and Other Sketches (Oxford Mark Twain)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (November, 1996)
Authors: Mark Twain, Shelley Fisher Fishkin, and Roy, Jr. Blount
Average review score:

Can frogs really be "THAT" big?
Yes - they can. At Heights Elementary in Pittsburg California back 35 years ago or so we would have a jumping frog contest every year in the circles used for kick ball. All the kids would bring giant frogs and let them go from the center of the ring. OH MY! It was so much fun - all because of this book (I am still scared of frogs to this day) but I love the book and every kid should read it.

excellent
"Jumping Frog" is a wonderful, hilarious story (among a group of several other great ones) that my father read to me as a kid. If you love Twain, get it.

Average review score:

Great overview to prepare for offshore outsourcing
This book is a great overview of approaching the decision to offshore IT enabled services. The text focuses on the financial, operational, and governance strategies, as well as specific criteria involved evaluating offshore opportunities. Also included are case studies demonstrating the potential benefits and drawbacks. Overall, the book provides the decision maker with a bsic understanding of what he or she will need to take advantage of outsourcing to an offshore provider.

Well written, practical and insightful
The authors' obvious practical experience and understanding of the techincal and market complexities makes the book a valuable resource, and the skill with which it is written makes it very accessible. It is the best book on this topic I have seen.

Stahman's Shawls and Scarves: Lace Faroese-Shaped Shaws from the Neck Down & Scamen's Carves
Published in Paperback by Rocking Chair Press (February, 2000)
Authors: Myrna A. I. Stahman, Ralph R. Blount, Mark Vandrsys, and Peter E. Wilson
Average review score:

Appreciation for Myrna Stahman's work
Myrna Stahman did a wonderful job with her research and planning for working a Faroese-Shaped Shawl from the neck down. Her information was detailed, informative, and creative. Her many hours of work have made my job so much easier! It does take some concentration to pursue these patterns. The end results are worth the challenge. Myrna Stahman has taken much of the frustration out of Faroese shawls. Her work allows you to pursue your own pattern designs with style and confident results.

In appreciation of all Stahman's work
I have knitted one shawl as presented in the book (Catharina), and one that I designed using Stahman's design guidelines. In addition, I have also made several Seaman's Scarves following her "Matthew" pattern (dedicated to the memory of Matthew Shepard). In all cases I used my own handspun yarns. While it took some concentration to adapt a totally different lace design to the Faroese shaping, I couldn't have done it without Stahman's many hours of planning and designing. I'm indebted to this book, and recommend it to adventurous novices or experienced knitters alike. [....]

American Occupation of the Philippines 1898-1912
Published in Hardcover by Oriole Editions (June, 1973)
Author: James H. Blount
Average review score:

Excellent primary source on the early U.S. colonial period.
Originally published in 1913, this is a partisan history written by a man who served as a soldier and circuit court judge in the Philippines and from 1906 onward as a vice president of the Anti-Imperialist League in the U.S. Blount's account is valuable for its discussion of continuing warfare after the war was officially declared over on July 4, 1902, and for his attention to contemporary political details seldom discussed in more recent histories.

A "must" for all Mark Twain fans!

The Cross Burns Brightly: A Hall-Of-Famer Tackles Racism and Adversity to Help Troubled Boys
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (October, 1993)
Authors: Mel Blount and Cynthia Sterling
Average review score:

Excellant. A real vivid description of injustice.
People need to take a real good look and see what the primary function of our Children and Youth Services is. It seems that they operate in such a way to fit their own needs and not the needs of the children. I rate this book a five star. Why should we be held responsible for what we do while they bury their mistakes within the system. It is about time these so called Social Workers started be held accountable for destroying people's lives.

If Only You Knew How Much I Smell You: True Portraits of Dogs
Published in Hardcover by Bulfinch Press (May, 1998)
Authors: Valerie Shaff and Roy Blount
Average review score:

funny and touching
This is a great gift-book idea, if you can manage to actually give it away. The photos are wonderfully done, featuring both "action" shots and natural, endearing portraits. These are real dogs, not models--no dangerously thin Italian greyhounds lounging on marble terraces here--and Shaff catches all their moods, movements, and expressions.

The accompanying poetry by Roy Blount is a delight as well. As others reviewers have pointed out, this isn't puppy-wuppy talk, but witty, funny, and perfectly suited to the photographs. I thought several times as I was reading that Blount must be a life-long dog owner. He knows those looks and what's going to happen next.

Altogether, a truly light-hearted book well worth having.

Woof, woof! (Human translation: "Great book!")
Dogs are said to be Man's Best Friend -- and with this book, it's easy to see why! The many moods and faces of dogs (ranging from comical, to cuddly, to downright cute) are chronicled in gorgeous sepia-toned photographs by Valerie Shaff. While Wegman dresses up his Weimaraners to elicit "human comedy gone to the dogs", Shaff shows the true nature of the beast through poignant and heartwarming pictures that allow the personalities of the dogs to really shine through. Each photo is

accompanied by incisively witty text by Roy Blount, one of America's best-known humourists. Whether you're a dog owner or not, this book will bring a smile to your face (and if it doesn't...well, then, you probably just haven't met the right dog yet!)

CUTE AS A BUTTON!
Never heard of "Doggeral"? Well, you will after you read this fascinating book. You will understand it, speak it and remember it. Canine lovers everywhere will be captivated by the beautiful photographs and witty verses. Here you will find dogs, dogs and more dogs of every description. As you turn the pages, the reader will be deeply touched with warmth, sadness, joy and wonder for each page tells a different story. This book is delightful to own, a pleasure to read, and makes an excellent coffee table book. One could not possibly look at a playfully wagging tail, a wet nose or huge sad eyes and not be overcome with emotion. After all, dogs are more than pets, they are our canine family to love, respect and care for - just like children.

Cross Your Heart and Hope to Die
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica, Inc. (05 April, 2001)
Author: M. E. Blount
Average review score:

A Fast Paced Action Techno-Thriller
M.E. Blount has created a first class thriller. It is a reader-grabbing cross between a sophisticated spy techno-action tale and an intricate crime novel. The technical research and detail are complete, as is the character and plot development. The story has a number of unanticipated and riveting twists keeping the reader guessing as to how the story will proceed. Frankly, don't start this book until you have some time to spare because you won't be able to put it down. The review by James Hursey is accurate, but I must give it 5 stars. This is a super story, one that should not be missed. I am looking forward to more works by Blount.
